I cant wait to start handing these out at GDC!
Got some exciting updates for today! Recently, I finally got my first batch of business cards, courtesy of graphic designer Cierra Goldstein whose work you might recognize from some of the pieces in the portfolio section of the website. Don’t they look awesome?
Before you ask, the sound file the words are superimposed over is a recording of me speaking my name. Cierra had to stretch the original picture a little bit, but the overall effect is great. We had been batting around ideas for ages, mostly because I wanted a business card that could really convey that I do music, sound effects, audio engineering, production recording, even music tutoring, vocal performance and conducting. That is of course a very tall order (can I help it that I wear that many hats?) so this card is a nice melding of everything I do. It’s a “first draft”, and I expect later on I’ll have different cards to hand out for different occasions.

Phone number blacked out to limit the number of prank calls I get.

Now, for your dose of music for the day! In my bio and on my Linkedin page, it says that I write music for Catalina Games, which is true. Until now, I’ve refrained from putting any music for the games online because of my NDA with the company. However, after discussing it with Alex McPhearson (the CEO and a friend of mine) I was given the go ahead to show off some of my work. That being said, I’m going to be tight-lipped about anything that isn’t my field on the project until I’m given the green light to openly promote it, so for now all you’re gonna get is music.
Since Catalina Games moved to PA, the game has changed from what I was originally working on to a substantially different thematic setting. The game now will have a pirate theme and feel. It’s my feeling that if this is gonna be a pirate game, its gonna have the most epic music I can possibly muster.

I tried to stick mainly to instruments that would be rather common with the golden age of piracy, and with music styles that would actually be heard on or around a ship. Surprisingly the number of sea chanties out there worth orchestrating is very few indeed, and so I went for a waltz. I didn’t opt for “What Would you do with a Drunken Sailor?” because I didn’t want to sound too much like the trailers for Dishonored which were littering the internet a few months ago.
Because of the more lighthearted tone we're taking, I've been exploring some of my favorite music from Donkey Kong Country 2 for this project (which I felt had great music, especially for its time). This piece represents about 4 hours of work.
